Hunter Hayes witnessed a tragedy yesterday. He was watching the Blue Angels in Smyrna, Tennessee, near Nashville, as they practiced for their weekend airshow when one of the jets went down in a horrific crash that killed the pilot.
Hayes was there because he was going to take a ride IN one of the jets. His publicist told WKRN-TV that the accident took place right in front of him, but he wasn’t injured.
According to a source on the scene, Hayes was talking to a member of the Blue Angels team when the crash occurred.
“[Hayes] jumped up from his chair and went to the window to see the smoke,” the insider told PEOPLE. “There was a big fireball and tons of smoke. Everyone is waiting in stunned silence, hoping for some good news.”
Hunter hit up social media after the tragic accident.
A similar accident happened yesterday in Colorado when a Thunderbird F-16 crashed, but the pilot ejected safely. It was returning from a flyover of the Air Force Academy graduation ceremony, which was attended by President Obama.
