There was still some doubt as to whether his fast start would hold up down the stretch of Sunday’s PIGtucky Derby. But in the end, Jimmy FalLOIN showed a standing room only crowd at PIGlico Downs in Buckley he was more than up for the task. The young, upstart oinker held off surging young gun Billy FRANKS at the tape to capture the Run for the Noses title at Maris Farms.
FalLOIN, from the Late Night Talk Show Host group presented by Bacon Forever, led from wire to wire. He had actually extended his lead around turn two before FRANKS, a first-year competitor (and part of the Anytime Fitness Group), made his energetic push coming out of turn three and down the stretch to make it close. But the push came too late.
“Jimmy showed some moxy and that he’s not going to be affected by the magnitude of the event,” race announcer Mike “The Squeak” Meeks said. “He’s no stranger to the limelight, and he’s got a trick or two up his little pig uniform. Billy is a young gun on the rise, but today, FalLOIN was just too much for him.”
There are three sets of racing pigs, each supported by a major sponsor – the Fitness Group presented by Anytime Fitness, the Late Night Talk Show Hosts presented by Bacon Forever and the Local Seattle Radio DJs presented by Papa Murphy’s Pizza. The top victory earners from each group, plus the hog with the next most victories during the 13 preliminary races, qualify for the marquee race on Sunday.
Fans bet on the pig they feel will win during qualifying race sessions and for the three marquee races. Their bets go in the form of a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. More than $12,000 has been raised and donated by this event over the course of the past three seasons. This weekend, close to 300 bets/donations were made and $350 raised for St. Jude. Including all the preliminary races, $563 has been raised so far this season. Papa Murphy’s is again graciously matching every dollar that fans bet/donate.
Coming into the PIGtucky Derby, FalLOIN was the overwhelming favorite, as he had collected 9 victories over those 13 qualifying rounds. The next closest competitor, El Lobo PUERCO, had qualified with 6 wins, and the ageless Jack LaLOIN had 5. FRANKS had slipped in as the final qualifier for Sunday’s marquee race with only 4 wins, but was certainly a worth competitor for the sizzling FalLOIN.
LaLOIN finished a distant third, while PUERCO – who came into the Derby as the other highly favored hog – crashed in turn three. According to his camp, PUERCO may have pulled a hammy and will certainly have to sit out a couple of training sessions this week.
More preliminary racing will continue on Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday for the pigs to qualify for Sunday’s BOARmont Stakes.
